Buying a Schramm T685: Start With the Support Plan, Not the Spec Sheet

Before you buy a Schramm T685, ask the seller to walk you through what happens when a replacement part isn't in stock. If the answer doesn't include a specific lead time, a backup source, and a person you can call, keep looking. That is the conclusion I reached when our drilling contractor added a T685 in 2024, and it's the part I'd check first if I had to make the decision again.

To be clear about who's writing: I'm not a driller or an engineer. I handle purchasing for a 24-person drilling contractor in the Mid-Atlantic. We drill water wells, shallow geothermal holes, and occasional mineral exploration. I manage roughly nine hundred thousand dollars a year in purchases across eleven or twelve vendors, which means I'm the one who signs POs and explains downtime to the operations manager. When our operations team said we needed a replacement before the 2025 season, the Schramm T685 went on our list immediately. That felt different because it was different.

Three checks I use before a capital equipment purchase

I didn't always ask these questions. When I took over purchasing in 2021, I compared quotes and looked for the lowest number. That worked for office supplies. It didn't work for a rig. After one bad experience with a vendor that promised complete support and then had no spare stock, I built a checklist.

  1. Parts availability in writing. Not usually in stock. I want lead times for the items that stop a drill, and I want someone to confirm how emergency orders get handled.
  2. A named service contact. Not a general customer line that bounces between departments. A person who already understands our rig and our operating area.

There's a rule I keep in mind from the FTC's advertising guidance at ftc.gov: claims should be truthful and, when necessary, substantiated. That guidance is aimed at marketers, but it works for buyers too. A claim like strong parts support is close to meaningless unless someone can point to a stock report, a lead time, or a response protocol. I now ask for proof before I add a supplier to our approved list.

We chose Schramm after they told us no

Here's where the story gets less typical. During a call about the T685 configuration, our crew asked for the largest optional air package. More air felt safer. The Schramm applications engineer asked questions about our typical wells, then said the larger package wasn't justified for most of our work. It would add weight, cost, and fuel burn without improving drilling speed in the formations we actually see. He offered to keep that option available if we shifted toward deeper and larger-diameter projects, but he did not push us into it.

That answer cost Schramm some revenue in the short term. It also made the rest of their recommendations more believable. A supplier that admits what you don't need has more credibility when it tells you what you do need. That is a large part of why we went with Schramm.

What happened after the purchase order

Even after I signed, I kept second-guessing. We had paid a premium over the lowest quote, and I worried that I had bought good marketing instead of good support. The weeks between signing and delivery were the hardest part. There was no drill yet to prove anything, only a stack of documents and promises.

Then the commissioning technician arrived. He did the startup work, stayed longer than scheduled to watch our crew run a full shift, and left a handwritten note with the names of two people to call. A small thing, maybe. But it matched what the sales process had promised. By the time I closed out the purchase file, I was relieved we didn't try to save money on the cheapest package.

Where I would not make the same call

This approach is not for everyone. If you have a large maintenance shop, a deep parts inventory, and several rigs, you may be able to absorb more risk and buy on price. A company that can fix most problems in-house doesn't need the same level of manufacturer support. And if your project is a single well or a one-off exploration hole, renting is probably smarter than buying any new rig, including this one.

For a small contractor, though, the math works differently. Our crews work in areas where a broken seal or a failed hose can mean a two-day round trip for a part. When I chose the T685, I wasn't just buying drilling capacity. I was buying a way to avoid those two-day stops. That is a choice I'm comfortable defending to finance, because finance only sees the cost if the drill is parked.
