If the sticker plus that fund lands close to a proven machine from a reputable dealer, the "bargain" isn't a bargain—it's a risk you're underwriting.
My honest take: the lowest quote has cost buyers more in roughly 60% of the cases I've reviewed. One case from Q3 2024 sticks with me—a $30,000 savings on a used rig turned into a $71,000 repair bill within 18 months. That's not a one-off. It's a pattern.
Step 2: Pull the maintenance records before the walkaround
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's the one that tells you the most. The hour meter tells you how long the machine ran. It doesn't tell you how it was treated. Ask for:
- Oil sample reports, if available
- Dated service logs
- Compressor and rotary head rebuild history
- OEM parts receipts
A "we don't have records" answer is honestly one of the most expensive sentences in used equipment sales. I'd rather buy a machine with 5,000 hard hours and complete documentation than one with 2,000 hours and no history. Records are durable. Hours are just a number.
We didn't always do this. For years, we bought machines based on condition alone and got burned more than once. The third time we discovered a hidden repaint covering a mast crack, I built the checklist you're reading now. Should have done it after the first time.

On the rotary head: drain a little gearbox oil and give it a sniff. Burnt smell means heat damage. Check for play in the drive, then cycle the head up and down and listen for knocking.

For DTH and rotary drilling, the compressor is the heart of the machine. Run it up to full pressure and watch for pressure drop. Check the discharge air for oil—a light haze is normal, but a heavy mist means money. Aftercooler and separator corrosion also deserve a close look; that's where sloppy maintenance shows first.
This is where the "cheap" trap bites hardest. A compressor overhaul sits in the $20-40K ballpark. That wipes out any savings from buying the "deal" rig, and then some.
Step 5: Test the hydraulic system for hidden wear
Less glamorous, but it catches problems early. Look for cylinder drift, burnt or milky hydraulic oil, and leaks at fittings. If the seller allows, run a case drain flow test on the pumps—a quick health check that identifies internal wear before total failure.
Also check the date codes on hydraulic hoses. A rig with old hoses is going to have failures in the first season, and a full hose kit runs into the thousands. Add that to the Step 1 math.
Step 6: Check the carrier and undercarriage for real condition
Track pads, rollers, sprockets—wear here is predictable, so measure what's left and price the replacement. Compare engine hours against pump hours too. A large gap means the engine idled a lot, which isn't a deal-breaker but does affect value.
Look for signs of rigging. Sling marks or paint damage on top of the cab often mean the rig was lifted by crane or helicopter. Done right, no problem. Done wrong, there's hidden frame stress you'll find at the worst possible time.
Step 7: Run every function under load
Never skip the operational test. Cycle the mast, advance the rotary head under load, test the safety shutoffs, and pull the emergency stop at least once. Ask for stored fault codes and have the seller explain each one. Video the entire demo—you'll want the record later.
If the rig is an electric-powered Schramm, add the power cable and electrical cabinet to your review. Moisture damage there is common and expensive to chase.
And if the seller seems anxious to wrap up the demo, slow down. A good machine sells itself. Give your checklist time to find problems, so the machine doesn't find your crew.
Common mistakes that turn bargains into burdens
First, don't rely on the seller's "certified inspector." Get everything in writing.
Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), sales claims need to be truthful and substantiated—so require the spec sheet, test records, and claimed condition to match what's actually on the lot.
If a claim isn't documented, assume it isn't true.
Second, don't skip the run test to save a day. I once saw a buyer take a $25,000 discount to skip the demo. The machine had a cracked final drive. That's not a discount; it's a down payment on a rebuild.
Third, remember that used equipment prices move. The same model can swing 30-40% depending on region and season. A price that looks "cheap" in January can look normal by summer. Check current listings and treat any ballpark figure carefully.
Bottom line: a used Schramm can be a solid investment if you run these checks.
