I've spent six years buying parts for Schramm rigs, and the comparison below comes from purchase orders, not marketing.
When I first took over parts procurement for our drilling fleet, I had one rule: lowest quote wins. That rule lasted until the first field failure. Let's be honest. Aftermarket parts win on price. On a DTH hammer rebuild kit in Q3 2024, the aftermarket quote was $2,850. Schramm OEM was $3,600. That is a 21% difference. If I'm ordering filters, hoses, or rod boots, I take that saving. To be fair, aftermarket suppliers often use equivalent materials for simple parts. In those categories, paying Schramm list price is a brand tax I don't need.
Failure Cost: Where the Cheap Part Gets Expensive
Here's the thing: a hammer rebuild kit is not a filter. It sits at the bottom of the drill string and takes the shock of every blow. In March 2024, we installed an aftermarket drive shaft assembly on a T450. It cost $4,100 installed. The OEM assembly was $5,900. The numbers said aftermarket. My gut said OEM, because a drive shaft carries a lot of torque. I went with the numbers.
The shaft failed at 90 hours. The replacement cost—new OEM part, freight, a service truck, and an 18-hour crew standby—totaled $11,300. I still kick myself. If I had paid the $1,800 difference, the rig would have kept running. Instead, I paid $11,300 to learn what the TCO spreadsheet should have shown me.
After that, our procurement policy changed. Now every load-bearing part gets a quote from at least three suppliers and a documented TCO calculation signed by the shop supervisor. It takes longer, but it stops the kind of decision that saves $1,800 on paper and loses $11,300 in the field.
Delivery Certainty: The Counterintuitive Advantage
Most people assume aftermarket parts are easier to source. That is not what I've seen. In June 2024, a compressor coupling failed on a Sunday. We had a geothermal well to spud on Thursday. The aftermarket supplier said ten business days, with no guarantee. Schramm's parts network had the coupling in stock and could get it to us in 48 hours for an extra $420.
I paid the $420 without a second thought. It wasn't for the coupling. It was for the certainty. If the part didn't show up on Thursday, I would have a fully crewed rig sitting idle at roughly $480 an hour. The expedite fee was under 4% of a single day's downtime cost. That is not a premium; that is an insurance discount.
Support, Warranty, and Supplier Relationships
I have mixed feelings about OEM support. Some of it feels like paying extra for a logo. But when a part fails in the field, the question is not who sold it to you. It is who answers the phone and gets the next part moving.
Schramm OEM parts come with a warranty, and more importantly, with documentation. For anything that rotates, impacts, or carries the drill string, I want traceability. Aftermarket parts for non-critical wear items are fine. For driveline and rotation head parts, I want the manufacturer's engineering behind the component.
Before buying an aftermarket part, ask what happens if it fails and damages the adjacent component. Some aftermarket suppliers will replace the part itself. They won't pay for the gearbox it took out. Schramm's warranty covers the part and, in some cases, associated damage when the part was installed according to spec. That distinction has saved us from two costly arguments.
There is also the relationship effect. Because we buy OEM parts consistently, our Schramm distributor gives us priority during tight inventory periods. That priority has saved us more than the aftermarket discounts ever did.
Build Your Own Cost Comparison
Copy this into your procurement notes: Total Part Cost = Part Price + Labor to Install + (Estimated Failure Rate × Downtime Cost) + Freight + Expedite Premium. Fill it out before you approve the order. It takes 15 minutes, and it has saved me far more than the hours I spent haggling with suppliers.
Use historical failure rates from your own shop. In our system, aftermarket driveline parts have had a 12% failure rate within 500 hours; OEM parts are under 2%. Those numbers are the difference between a good deal and a bad one.
What I Actually Buy Now
After six years and more than 200 orders, here is my rule:
- Non-critical wear items—seals, filters, hoses, rod boots—are fine aftermarket. Save the 15-30%.
- Load-bearing or driveline components like drive shafts, gearboxes, hammers, and rotation heads are OEM only. No exceptions.
- Any part needed for a rig that is currently down and on a deadline gets OEM with expedited delivery if it shortens the lead time.
Why? Because a parts budget doesn't blow up in one dramatic moment. How does a caterpillar turn into a butterfly? Not in a single leap. It happens inside the chrysalis, step by unseen step. An aftermarket drive shaft. One missed deadline. One $420 expedite fee that should have been in the budget. Then you look up and the annual overspend is six figures.
The cheapest Schramm part is not the most cost-effective Schramm part. The part that keeps the rig turning is.
