But depreciation doesn't account for productivity. If the T500 earns you $50,000 more in revenue per year because you finish jobs faster and have fewer breakdowns, the T500's higher depreciation is more than offset.

  • You're drilling shallower (< 500 ft) and don't need the extra pull-down
  • You can find a *very* well-documented used unit (full service history, no hidden surprises)

Buy the Schramm T500 IF:

  • You're in business for the long haul (5+ years)
  • You need maximum uptime and hate dealing with unexpected breakdowns
  • You're drilling deeper or harder formations that need the extra power
  • You value a warranty and the peace of mind that comes with current-production parts support

For me, personally, I'd take the T500. The higher initial investment is a harder sell to finance, but the operational data from the past two years is undeniable. The T450 is a good machine—we still have one in our fleet—but if I were starting from scratch today, I'd go with the T500. It's more expensive to buy, but cheaper to own. And that's the comparison that matters.
