To me, the lesson isn't 'always buy OEM parts.' It's about what you're paying for when you need certainty. If you have a deadline, a cheap part with a 'probably on time' promise is a gamble. The premium for a confirmed schedule is not just paying for speed. You're paying for someone to check the details, test the equipment, and stand behind the result. An uncertain cheap option is more expensive than a confident price.
This pattern has shown up over and over in the four years I've been reviewing drill parts. I do not mean a few isolated orders. I mean dozens of decisions where the assumption 'same spec' overrode basic verification. In hindsight, the contractor's second order was a no-brainer. The first one was the expensive lesson.
I'm not saying Schramm is the only company that can do this, and I'm not saying every drill rig failure is avoidable. Harsh environments eat equipment. But the difference between a vendor who documents the build and a vendor who just ships a box is exactly the difference between a plan and a hope.
As of January 2025, the contractor in Nevada still runs Schramm equipment, and their procurement checklists now include a line for field-failure cost before anyone signs a PO. I like that.
